Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (TSX.V: VM) (OTC Pink: VYYRF) has announced significant progress in its proprietary Mueller iodine extraction process, achieving 99.8% purity and over 90% overall recovery in laboratory tests using real oilfield brine. This milestone is a critical step toward the company's goal of establishing a domestic iodine supply for the North American radiology contrast media market, while also offering oil and gas producers a way to generate value from produced brine.
The company has established a laboratory and fabrication site in Houston, Texas, to advance the Mueller process using Anadarko and Permian Basin produced water. Key achievements include continuous operation using real oilfield brine, construction of a mobile field-capable pilot unit sized to 80,000 liters per day, and generation of clean brine suitable for disposal or reinjection, aligning with zero-liquid-discharge objectives. The company has also completed a preliminary design basis for a 200 metric ton per year plant and validated the process's low operating cost and environmental profile.
With the field-capable pilot unit now built, field testing is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks, with operations planned for September 2026. The pilot unit is designed to treat approximately 80,000 liters per day on a batch-continuous basis. Field testing will provide real-world operating data, supporting the design of modular, relocatable production units that can be deployed at multiple saltwater disposal sites. This approach aims to produce iodine concentrate that can be transported to a central hub for final polishing, prilling, and packaging.
Engineering and project planning are progressing to support the transition from laboratory validation to field demonstration and commercial-scale design. Current efforts focus on finalizing process systems for iodine polishing, prilling, and packaging, while further defining the modular field unit and central processing hub configuration. Subsequent engineering phases will advance through front-end loading stages, including concept and basic design, to refine cost estimates and support future commercial deployment.
For oil and gas operators and produced water midstream companies, this development is significant. Billions of barrels of produced brine are handled and disposed of each year at considerable cost, yet only a small fraction of the iodine they contain is recovered. Voyageur aims to be the first to change this equation, building what it believes will be the first economically profitable, field-proven iodine extraction process. This aligns with the broader industry trend toward brine valorization.
Voyageur's vertically integrated strategy is designed to improve supply-chain security, reduce reliance on imported raw materials, and lower operating costs for medical imaging contrast agents. Iodine is a critical raw material for iodinated contrast media, and the Mueller process is a key component of this strategy.
