The Better World Regulatory Coalition Inc. (BWRCI) has announced the formation of the Vertical Stack Coalition, a new initiative aimed at deploying near-zero emissions energy storage infrastructure within urban environments. The coalition's framework centers on vertically stacked molten salt battery systems designed to fit within existing city footprints, addressing the growing demand for dispatchable power from AI compute, data centers, reshored manufacturing, and defense infrastructure.

According to BWRCI, traditional horizontal energy expansion is slowing due to saturated transmission corridors and lengthy permitting timelines. Vertical Stack proposes building upward within urban-compatible structural envelopes, similar to how skyscrapers concentrated city populations. Each installation can deliver multi-gigawatt-hour daily output with utility-scale dispatch characteristics, using modular replication to scale geometrically rather than linearly.

The chosen chemistry—molten salt batteries—offers near-zero operational emissions, with life-cycle assessments showing a global warming potential as low as 0.0306 kg CO2 eq/kWh. Unlike lithium-ion systems, molten salt batteries do not exhibit thermal runaway, rely on flammable solvents, or propagate oxygen-fed combustion events. The design also allows for full domestic sourcing of materials, reducing geopolitical exposure and aligning with U.S. industrial reshoring efforts. BWRCI notes that this architecture is compatible with long-term institutional capital, such as the JPMorgan Chase Security and Resiliency Initiative.

Scalability is a key focus. Post-permits and foundations, total project duration is estimated to be 80–90% faster than traditional carbon steel or concrete builds. Standardized structural envelopes, module integration, and dispatch logic enable parallelized fabrication and sequencing. The coalition envisions that cities adopting Vertical Stack can achieve higher solar penetration by storing midday oversupply for evening demand, reducing curtailment and localizing energy capture.

The architecture is also designed to be nuclear-ready, electrically compatible with modular nuclear generation. Additionally, with appropriate inverter and switching design, Vertical Stack installations can support blackstart capability, enabling islanded operation and grid restoration after collapse. This urban blackstart capability is seen as essential for sovereignty and resilience.

Ownership models include municipal, community, utility, corporate microgrid, defense installation, and industrial campus structures. BWRCI emphasizes that this is not backup power but localized energy authority. The coalition is actively engaging municipal utilities, independent power producers, modular nuclear developers, data center operators, industrial campus planners, defense infrastructure stakeholders, and institutional capital partners.

Max Davis, inventor of Consumer Earned Tokenized Equities (CETEs) and founder of DigiPie International PBC, is the first-named inventor/designer of the Vertical Stack initiatives. Davis is also a founding architect of the Cyberg movement, which focuses on ensuring humanity retains physical authority over embodied AI systems.
