UGI Issues Another Scam Alert as Customers Lose Hundreds of Dollars to Fraudsters

UGI Utilities, Inc. has issued another scam alert as the company reports a resurgence in fraudulent activities targeting its customers. In recent incidents, scammers have impersonated UGI representatives, demanding upfront payments to initiate or restore natural gas or electric service. Several customers have fallen victim, losing hundreds of dollars.

The utility company, which serves more than 760,000 customers across Pennsylvania, warned that scammers often use high-pressure tactics, threatening service disconnection if immediate payment is not made. They may demand payment via prepaid debit cards, wire transfers, or other non-traceable methods. UGI emphasized that it never requests payment through such means and that legitimate service initiation does not require upfront fees beyond standard deposits for new accounts.

“We urge our customers to be vigilant,” said John Mason, a UGI spokesperson. “If someone calls claiming to be from UGI and demands immediate payment, hang up and call us directly at the number on your bill or our official website.”

UGI advises customers to verify any suspicious communication by contacting the company directly at www.ugi.com or by calling the customer service number listed on their monthly statement. The company also reminds customers that it will never send a representative to collect payment in person or request payment via cryptocurrency.

The announcement follows a pattern of similar scams reported across the utility industry, where fraudsters exploit customer concerns about service disruptions. UGI has previously issued warnings and continues to work with law enforcement to combat these crimes. The company encourages anyone who suspects they have been targeted to report the incident to local police and to UGI’s customer service team.
