The 3rd Smart Lighting Expo and the 17th Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Spring Edition) opened today at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, running from 20 to 23 April. Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the twin fairs bring together around 900 exhibitors under the theme 'Go Smart, Live Green.' The events introduce several new zones, including the debut of 'Light Lab,' which focuses on lighting solutions that combine innovation and sustainability.
Jenny Koo, Deputy Executive Director of the HKTDC, noted that this year's fairs include new exhibitors from the Netherlands and Vietnam, as well as industry leaders such as Absen and Shanghai Sansi. Absen's LED displays have been used at the World Cup and World Expos, and the company has ranked first nationally in LED display exports for 16 consecutive years, while Shanghai Sansi supplies over 60% of the screens in Times Square, New York. The Smart Lighting Expo is part of the Business of Innovation and Technology Week (BIT Week) and features the new Smart Commercial Display & Stage Audio-Visual Zone, which highlights lighting products for cultural tourism and performing arts.
According to Statista, the global smart lighting market is expected to reach US$44 billion by 2030. The International Energy Agency noted that a second wave of LED transformation is imminent, with opportunities in regions where LED penetration remains low. Early generation LED products are also reaching the end of their service life, creating demand for high-efficiency and intelligent lighting systems.
The newly introduced 'Light Lab' in Hall 3 features three scenario-based designs: the Lumin Garden displays garden lighting, smart lamp posts, and solar luminaires, with Shanghai Sansi LED Lighting presenting plant lighting fixtures that use proprietary ceramic technology; the Lumin Arena showcases professional-grade stadium lights and high bay lights, with Foshan Electrical and Lighting presenting its FSeries stadium lights that are 20% to 45% lighter than traditional fixtures; and the Lumin Gallery focuses on high-end museum lighting, featuring modular track lights and spotlights from Guangdong ThinkGisp that emphasise glare control.
Several group pavilions are present, including the Zhongshan Smart Home Zone, the Smart Ecosystem and IoT Supply Chain Area from the Shanghai Pudong Intelligent Lighting Association, and pavilions from Shenzhen, Xiamen, Changzhou Zouqu, and Zhejiang. The fairs highlight four major lighting trends: smart lighting, green lighting, entertainment lighting, and human-centric lighting.
Exhibitors like BWEETECH showcase the Bwee Smart Control Knob, supporting Zigbee protocol and Apple Home integration. KC Lighting presents the M7 Micro 48V Track System with Casambi and DALI smart control. In green lighting, Absen's A25 Series low carbon LED display consumes less than one kilowatt hour per square metre per day, while Guangdong Zhongqian New Energy presents solar street lights. For entertainment, Zhongyuan Innovation's Ambit 3+ Spot GREENTEK dynamic backlight supports 16 million colours, and Ledmy introduces a 360-degree neon lighting series. Human-centric lighting includes Shenzhen Norming Lighting's dim-to-warm track lights and Mascuge's aroma diffuser humidifying lamp.
The Asian Lighting Forum on 20–21 April will discuss immersive entertainment lighting and landscape lighting design, featuring experts like concert lighting designer from ANH Design Company and the Bund's landscape lighting designer from Tungsten (Shanghai). The Smart Lighting Solution Forum on 21 April will cover smart home lighting and human-centric entertainment lighting. Exhibitor Opple Lighting, as the official partner of the buyers' VIP lounge, showcases its SDL smart spectral lighting technology.
