Trilogy Metals Secures US$35.6 Million U.S. Government Investment to Advance Alaska Mining Projects

Trilogy Metals Inc. (NYSE American: TMQ) (TSX: TMQ) has completed a strategic equity investment by the U.S. Department of War totaling approximately US$35.6 million, the company announced. The investment was made across transactions with Trilogy and South32 Limited. Trilogy and South32 have committed the full proceeds to Ambler Metals LLC, their 50/50 joint venture, to advance exploration and development of the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects in northwestern Alaska.

The Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects include the high-grade Arctic polymetallic deposit and the Bornite copper-cobalt deposit. These deposits are located within the Ambler Mining District, which is considered one of the richest and most-prospective known copper-dominant districts in the world. The district hosts polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits containing copper, zinc, lead, gold, and silver, as well as carbonate replacement deposits that have been found to host high-grade copper and cobalt mineralization. Exploration efforts have focused on the Arctic VMS deposit and the Bornite carbonate replacement deposit, both within a land package spanning approximately 190,929 hectares. Ambler Metals has an agreement with NANA Regional Corporation, Inc., an Alaska Native Corporation, providing a framework for exploration and potential development in cooperation with local communities.

The U.S. government's investment underscores the strategic importance of domestic critical minerals. The Department of War also committed to work in good faith to help facilitate financing for construction of the proposed 211-mile Ambler Road in coordination with the State of Alaska and the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority. This road is seen as essential for accessing the remote Ambler Mining District and developing its mineral resources. The involvement of the U.S. government signals strong support for securing a domestic supply of copper and cobalt, which are vital for national security, renewable energy technologies, and electric vehicles.

Trilogy Metals' vision is to develop the Ambler Mining District into a premier North American copper producer while protecting and respecting subsistence livelihoods. The company holds a 50 percent interest in Ambler Metals LLC, which has a 100 percent interest in the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects. On December 19, 2019, South32, a globally diversified mining and metals company, exercised its option to form a 50/50 joint venture with Trilogy Metals. South32's participation in the joint venture and its contribution to the investment further validate the potential of the projects.

For investors, this news is significant as it provides a substantial injection of capital for advancing the projects and demonstrates U.S. government backing, which could de-risk the permitting and financing processes. The commitment to facilitate the Ambler Road is a critical step, as infrastructure is a major hurdle for remote mining projects. The investment also highlights the growing focus on securing critical mineral supply chains within the United States.
