Top motivational speaker and bestselling author Rocky Romanella sees the value of AI, but recognizes that while AI can produce, it cannot lead. He believes the future still belongs to leaders who lead with humanity. In a recent newsletter he wrote: 'AI is everywhere in our headlines, our boardrooms, our classrooms, and our conversations. It is reshaping industries, accelerating decisions, and redefining how work gets done. But for all its power, AI still lacks the two things that have always moved people, teams, and organizations forward: A heart. And a soul.'
Romanella created his keynote, The Heart and Soul of AI, to remind leaders that people, not algorithms, are the true engine of progress. He challenges leaders and organizations to recommit to their people, their purpose, and their values. 'It is the operating system leaders need when AI handles the tactical and humans must elevate the strategic,' Romanella stated.
Drawing from a personal story, Romanella shared how his wife Debbie taught him a masterclass in leadership. When asked which of their children was her favorite, she replied, 'They all are, because everyone gets what they need when they need it.' That moment reshaped how he led teams and built organizations, and it is exactly the kind of leadership the AI era demands.
'AI has a superpower brain — one that can process data, spot patterns, and create extraordinary efficiencies. But only leaders have the heart, soul, and courage to lead their people through these dramatic and, when done properly, exciting changes,' Romanella noted.
With over four decades of experience, Romanella started his career in the world of clipboards and carbon paper, living through barcodes, automation, digital transformation, and now AI. He emphasizes that 'technology may change the work, but leadership must still lift the people.'
Romanella highlights what AI cannot do: 'AI can analyze data, but it cannot create meaning. AI can generate options, but it cannot generate belief. AI can automate tasks, but it cannot build trust.' He references the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team's 'Miracle on Ice' as an example of inspiration that AI cannot ignite.
Central to his keynote is the concept of AIAI — 'Am I All In?' — which he describes as 'the internal operating system leaders need in a world where AI handles the tactical and humans must elevate the strategic.' It challenges leaders to recommit to their people, purpose, and values.
Romanella introduces three questions every leader must master: 1) What is the issue or opportunity? 2) How do I get my team aligned and committed? 3) How do I turn intent into business results? These form the backbone of strategic leadership in the AI era.
