SoulfulDate Survey Reveals How Users Balance Efficiency and Personalization in Icebreakers

SoulfulDate has released findings from a voluntary survey of approximately 2,300 platform members on how they use Icebreakers, a built-in feature that provides pre-written conversation starters. The survey, conducted from April to June 2026, reveals a clear split: 52% of respondents used the template without modification, 41% modified it before sending, and 7% said their approach varies depending on the profile. This data offers insight into the broader tension between efficiency and self-expression in digital communication.

Among those who used the default template, 36% said it felt sufficient to start a conversation, 33% preferred saving time, 12% felt it already said what they would have written, and 19% were uncertain about what to write. The latter group aligns with research published in Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking indicating that individuals with higher social anxiety are less likely to initiate contact online, even when tools are provided.

The survey also examined sending behavior. 43% of users typically select three recipients per session, while only 11% consistently send to the maximum of five. Users who send to five recipients are 16 percentage points more likely to use the default template than the average (68% vs. 52%), suggesting that those aiming for broader reach prioritize efficiency over personalization.

Conversely, among customizers, 54% wanted the message to feel more personal, 23% wanted to reference something specific from the recipient's profile, 15% felt more comfortable sending something self-written, and 8% were dissatisfied with the default tone. Overall, 76% of respondents described their post-send experience as confident or neutral, indicating that Icebreakers serve as a low-friction entry point for most users.

A SoulfulDate product team representative commented, "The split we see in how SoulfulDate members use Icebreakers reflects something broader about how people approach a first message. Some members value the speed and simplicity of a ready-made prompt. Others want to say something that feels specific to the person they are reaching out to. Understanding the difference between those two groups and what each of them needs shapes how we think about the feature going forward."

The survey collected no personally identifiable information, with responses stored independently of user accounts and an anonymity notice shown before participation. All respondents were registered, active members who had used Icebreakers at least once, and no demographic data was collected beyond age eligibility (18+) and prior feature use. Participation was opt-in, so results reflect engaged users and may not represent the broader membership.

These findings are significant because they highlight a fundamental challenge in online communication: how to balance the desire for genuine connection with the practical need for efficiency. As platforms increasingly offer automated tools, understanding user preferences can help design features that cater to both mindsets, ultimately improving user experience and engagement.
