SERI Launches Champions Program to Recognize Voluntary Leadership in Electronics Sustainability

SERI, a global non-profit organization based in the United States, has announced the launch of its Champions Program, designed to recognize organizations that voluntarily go above and beyond to advance electronics sustainability. The program highlights a growing trend across the electronics industry where companies are taking the lead on sustainability initiatives not because regulations require it, but because they see the value in acting proactively.

The Champions Program provides a formal way to acknowledge organizations that drive progress through their own business practices, partnerships, and investments. According to SERI, the program recognizes champions in three categories: Promoters, who lead through voluntary sustainable practices such as including the R2 Standard in requests for proposals (RFPs); Collaborators, who partner with SERI on programs and initiatives; and Supporters, who provide significant financial resources to advance SERI's mission.

This initiative underscores the importance of voluntary action in achieving broader sustainability goals. By celebrating these leaders, SERI aims to inspire others within the industry to adopt similar practices. The program is part of SERI's broader 10/35 vision, which aims for 10-year lifespans to be common among electronics by 2035, with all materials reused at end-of-life.

SERI's numerous programs work to drive its mission, including the R2 Standard for responsible electronics reuse and recycling, the eSummit, the electronics impact (ei) Reporting Program, the ReThink Awards, and the International E-Waste Management Network (IEMN). These initiatives collectively aim to champion and drive the sustainable use, reuse, and recycling of electronics globally.

The Champions Program arrives at a time when electronic waste is a growing global concern. By recognizing voluntary leadership, SERI hopes to accelerate the transition to a more circular economy for electronics, where products are designed for longer lifespans and materials are recovered and reused. The program also encourages broader participation in sustainability efforts across the industry.
