SCHOTT Pharma, a leading provider of drug containment solutions and delivery systems, is reinforcing its commitment to science-based climate action following the validation of SCHOTT Group's updated climate targets by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The new framework, which includes the business scope of SCHOTT Pharma, introduces an absolute Scope 3 emissions reduction target, signaling a more impact-oriented approach to decarbonization across the value chain.
The updated targets maintain the previously validated Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions reduction goal of 46.2% by fiscal year 2030 compared to a 2019 baseline. However, the addition of a Scope 3 target commits to a 27.5% reduction in emissions from key value chain categories, including purchased goods and services (Scope 3.1), fuel- and energy-related activities (Scope 3.3), and processing of sold products (Scope 3.10). This shift from supplier commitments to absolute reductions enables SCHOTT Pharma to prioritize actions based on their potential to lower emissions, focusing on the most significant sources.
According to Reinhard Mayer, CFO of SCHOTT Pharma, the updated Scope 3 target allows the company to focus on emission reductions that matter most. The company has been actively pursuing climate action as a strategic priority, and this validation aligns its targets with the Paris Agreement goals, supporting efforts to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
With the validated science-based targets, SCHOTT Group and SCHOTT Pharma will discontinue their previous internal goal of "climate neutral by 2030," which was limited to Scope 1 and 2 emissions and relied on compensation. The new framework emphasizes absolute reductions and technological innovation.
SCHOTT Pharma continues to implement a broad portfolio of decarbonization initiatives. Since 2021, it has sourced Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) from renewable energies for its global manufacturing network. The company is also enhancing energy efficiency and integrating new technologies, such as an advanced membrane-based system for Water for Injection (WFI) production at its Swiss site, which reduces fuel demand and improves water efficiency.
Collaboration with suppliers and customers is central to reducing emissions throughout the value chain. SCHOTT Pharma evaluates suppliers' climate targets and renewable electricity sourcing, and participates in industry initiatives like Energize and Alliance to Zero to support decarbonization across the healthcare sector. Innovations in low-emission melting technologies within the SCHOTT Group's tubing business are crucial for reducing Scope 3.1 emissions associated with pharmaceutical packaging.
These efforts underscore SCHOTT Pharma's dedication to measurable and impactful climate action, ensuring its operations and value chain contribute to global sustainability goals.
