School Zone Safety: Essential Tips for Drivers, Pedestrians, and Bicyclists as New Academic Year Begins

As the new school year commences, traffic around school campuses inevitably increases, bringing with it a heightened risk for students walking, biking, or being driven to school. In response, the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and Caltrans are reinforcing their 'ABCs' of school zone safety: stay Alert for Bicyclists and watch for and yield to Children crossing the street. This initiative aims to reduce accidents and ensure that every child arrives at school safely.

Drivers play a pivotal role in protecting vulnerable road users. The OTS advises drivers to be patient, adhere to speed limits, and exercise extra caution at crosswalks and intersections, especially where children are present. Distracted driving, even a momentary glance at a phone, can lead to tragic outcomes. Impaired driving is strictly prohibited, and drivers should adjust their behavior to weather and visibility conditions. When passing bicyclists, drivers must wait until it is safe and provide at least 3 feet of clearance.

Pedestrians are equally responsible for their own safety. The guidance includes using sidewalks, walking facing traffic when no sidewalks exist, and crossing only at designated crosswalks. Before stepping into the street, pedestrians should look both ways and make eye contact with drivers to ensure they are seen. Visibility is crucial, especially after dark or in poor weather; wearing bright or reflective clothing and carrying a light can prevent accidents. Additionally, pedestrians should avoid distractions like headphones or phone use while crossing roads.

Bicyclists, including those on e-bikes, must stay alert and visible. The OTS recommends planning routes that utilize bike lanes or paths, equipping bicycles with lights and reflectors, wearing properly fitted helmets and bright clothing, and learning hand signals to communicate intentions. Yielding to pedestrians is a must. With the rising popularity of e-bikes among young people, the OTS highlights specific safety measures: e-bikes can reach speeds up to 28 mph, increasing injury risk. Helmets are mandatory for riders under 18 on Class 1-2 e-bikes and for all riders on Class 3 e-bikes. Riders must be at least 16 to operate a Class 3 e-bike. It is also important to note that e-bikes without pedals may be classified as e-motos and are not legal on roads. Riders should stick to bike lanes and be predictable in their movements.

The 'Go Safely CA' campaign, accessible at GoSafelyCA.org, offers further resources and emphasizes that safety is a shared responsibility. By following these tips, the community can contribute to a safer school year for all.
