Quantum BioPharma Ltd. (NASDAQ: QNTM) (CSE: QNTM) is advancing its lead multiple sclerosis drug candidate, Lucid-MS, toward a Phase 2 clinical trial while simultaneously pursuing commercial revenue from its unbuzzd product, according to Executive Co-Chairman and Co-Founder Anthony Durkacz in a recent BioMedWire Podcast. The dual approach underscores the company's strategy to balance clinical-stage pharmaceutical development with near-term commercial opportunities in neurodegenerative, metabolic and alcohol-misuse conditions.
Durkacz explained that Lucid-MS aims to address mobility damage caused by multiple sclerosis, a chronic autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system. The company has filed an investigational new drug application for a Phase 2 trial, which would mark the first administration of Lucid-MS to human MS patients. Preclinical models have shown that Lucid-MS, a patented new chemical entity, can prevent and reverse myelin degradation, the underlying mechanism of MS. If successful in humans, the drug could offer a disease-modifying therapy for the estimated 2.8 million people worldwide living with MS.
In parallel, Quantum BioPharma is capitalizing on its commercial product unbuzzd, designed to accelerate alcohol metabolism. The company spun out the over-the-counter version to Unbuzzd Wellness Inc., led by industry veterans, but retains a 19.84% ownership stake and a royalty agreement: 7% of sales until payments total $250 million, then 3% in perpetuity. Quantum also retains full rights to develop pharmaceutical formulations of the product. This revenue stream provides funding for clinical development without diluting shareholder value.
The company's strategy reflects a broader trend in biotech where firms combine high-risk drug development with commercial products to sustain operations. For investors, the progress of Lucid-MS into human trials represents a key catalyst. The MS treatment market, valued at over $20 billion annually, has high unmet need for therapies that repair myelin rather than just manage symptoms. Meanwhile, unbuzzd's market potential in the alcohol-misuse sector offers a tangible revenue source that could support long-term growth.
