Numa Numa Resources Positions Panguna Mine as Key to Global Copper Supply Amid Energy Transition

As the global energy transition accelerates, copper has emerged as a critical component in electrification and renewable energy infrastructure. Numa Numa Resources Inc., focused on developing the Panguna Mine on Bougainville Island in the South Pacific, is positioning itself at the nexus of this supply-driven shift. With known copper reserves of approximately 5.3 million metric tons, the Panguna Mine holds roughly 5.3% of all currently identified copper reserves globally, placing it in league with the copper endowments of entire countries.

According to a recent article, these reserves are substantial not only in absolute terms but also as a potential contributor to broadening the world’s supply base. Industry analysts argue that at least one new large-scale copper mine per year is needed to keep pace with demand. Numa Numa Resources is advancing development efforts on the project, which was the largest open-cut copper and gold mine in the world when it operated from 1972 to 1989 before being shuttered due to a civil war known as "the Crisis" between Bougainville and Papua New Guinea.

The Bougainville Peace Agreement of 2001 ended the war and granted Bougainville limited autonomy, including its own constitution, under which ownership of the mine reverted to its customary landowners. The Panguna Mine’s copper, gold, and silver ore resources remain largely intact, making it one of the largest ore bodies in the world, today worth approximately $100 billion. Most geologists who have studied Bougainville believe that other nearby locations such as Mainoki and Karato are highly prospective and may contain ore deposits similar in size and scale to those of the Panguna Mine.

Numa Numa Resources is a mining and infrastructure development company focused on unlocking transformational opportunities in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, where the company is headquartered and where its management has lived and worked for 10 years. The company is advancing the Panguna Mine project amid surging copper demand and limited global supply, positioning it as a key player in the energy transition.
