American businessman Randy Rolston has submitted a proposal to the governments of Malaysia and China for a targeted underwater search for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, based on new evidence including NASA satellite observations. The proposal, detailed in a 19-page technical report, identifies a probable impact zone along the 7th arc—the final satellite communication arc—between 23°S and 24°S in the Indian Ocean, approximately 680 miles west of Coral Bay, Australia. The search area spans roughly 400 square miles (1,000 km²), a fraction of the more than 90,000 square miles previously surveyed.
MH370 disappeared on 8 March 2014 while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, with 239 people on board, including 154 Chinese nationals and four Americans. Despite extensive searches, the main wreckage has never been located. Rolston's proposed site lies about 1,000 miles north of where Ocean Infinity concluded its most recent search in January 2026, and in an area that has not been searched before.
A key finding in the report is that NASA satellite observations from 8 March 2014 indicate elevated near-surface carbon monoxide in the Indian Ocean aligned with the 7th arc between 23°S and 24°S near the estimated time of MH370's last transmission. Rolston said the carbon monoxide observation “may represent a significant, previously under-examined lead” and believes it warrants an independent technical review and a targeted search. The report also discusses possible end-of-flight scenarios, including intentional actions leading to an ocean impact in the deep waters of the Wharton Basin.
