Pastor and author Kevin Horath has released his new book, The Self-Chosen One: When Prophecy Replaces Accountability, which tackles the growing problem of self-appointed spiritual authorities who operate without accountability. Horath, lead pastor of Hillside Bethel Ministries in Decatur, Illinois, draws on nearly three decades of ministry experience to address how platform culture and social media have reshaped spiritual influence. He argues that charisma often outpaces character and popularity replaces accountability in modern Christianity.
"This book is not about rejecting prophecy. It's about protecting it by restoring it to its proper place within biblical oversight and healthy church leadership," Horath said in a statement.
The book provides practical guidance for recognizing authentic prophetic ministry, understanding why spiritual gifts must function within church structure, and testing prophetic claims without dismissing the work of the Holy Spirit. Horath's journey into authorship began during a difficult personal season, encouraged by his wife, Kathy. Writing became therapeutic as he re-engaged with Scripture. Despite his passion for writing, he admits that self-promotion is challenging. "Marketing and selling myself is hard. I'm not a big name or a well-known personality, and I've dealt with bouts of imposter syndrome," he said.
His love for writing dates back to high school and was deepened by a college course on the Bible as literature. Horath hopes readers will understand that Scripture remains relevant today and offers practical life lessons when examined in context.
