The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) also estimates millions of tons of plastic enter the ocean annually, while Florida's coastal tourism supports over one million jobs, underscoring the need for responsible waterway use.
Pulichene, who has worked in boat rentals and watersports operations after serving on cruise ships in the Caribbean, developed the pledge based on his experience. "I've learned that taking an extra few minutes to explain something properly saves time later," he said. "When people understand how everything works, they feel more comfortable and enjoy themselves more." He emphasizes that good experiences start with preparation, noting, "People aren't just paying to use a boat; they're paying for peace of mind, reliable equipment, and helpful guidance." Pulichene believes safety and hospitality should not compete, stating, "Safety always comes first. The Respect the Water Personal Pledge includes seven actions: conducting a complete safety check before every trip; explaining safety procedures clearly; leaving every beach, dock, or shoreline cleaner than found; encouraging guests to respect weather conditions and not pressure participation; continuing education on boating safety and environmental stewardship; promoting responsible wildlife viewing by keeping a safe distance; and leading by example through calm communication and patience. Pulichene hopes the pledge encourages small daily choices that have lasting effects, saying, "Helping people enjoy the water today also means protecting it for future visitors."
To support the pledge, Pulichene provides a do-it-yourself toolkit with simple habits such as checking weather forecasts, telling someone your plans, inspecting life jackets, picking up litter, respecting wildlife, learning one safety rule weekly, carrying reusable bottles, slowing down in unfamiliar waters, offering advice to newcomers, and reflecting after each trip. A 30-day progress tracker guides users through weekly goals, from safety checks and learning tips to removing litter and sharing lessons.
