Golf Fans Learn Lifesaving CPR at Dow Championship

The American Heart Association is bringing its Nation of Lifesavers Mobile CPR unit to the Dow Championship golf event in Midland, Michigan, offering fans Hands-Only CPR training throughout tournament days. The initiative addresses a critical public health issue: according to the American Heart Association, most people who suffer cardiac arrest outside a hospital do not survive, largely because they do not receive immediate CPR.

Qualified CPR trainers will teach participants the correct rate and depth of chest compressions, emphasizing that Hands-Only CPR can be just as effective as traditional CPR during the first few minutes of an emergency. The simple steps—call 911 if a teen or adult collapses, then push hard and fast in the center of the chest—can double or triple a person's chance of survival when administered immediately.

The training is part of the American Heart Association's Nation of Lifesavers movement, which aims to double survival rates from cardiac arrest by 2030. The organization is partnering with the LPGA and Dow, a global materials science leader, to empower more people to respond confidently in cardiac emergencies. This marks another major sporting event for the initiative, which has previously activated at Super Bowls, NFL Drafts, NBA All-Star Games, and upcoming FIFA Fan Festival sites.

During tournament week, Dow's SOAR Summit will feature a fireside chat highlighting resilience and recovery following cardiac events. NFL Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders and National Women's Soccer League player Savy King will join American Heart Association CEO Nancy Brown to share personal stories and encourage fans to learn CPR. “Every second counts when a cardiac arrest occurs, and far too often help doesn’t arrive in time because bystanders don’t feel prepared to act,” said Brown. “We’re grateful to work with Dow and the LPGA to bring this lifesaving education directly to the community.”

Dow Chair and CEO Jim Fitterling emphasized the company's commitment to healthier communities. “Hosting the Nation of Lifesavers CPR activation at the Dow Championship and convening leaders and athletes at our SOAR Summit reflects our belief in the power of connection, education and action,” he said. The American Heart Association publishes the official scientific guidelines for CPR and is the worldwide leader in resuscitation science. According to the association, nine out of ten people who suffer cardiac arrest outside a hospital die, often because they do not receive immediate CPR.

Fans can learn how to save a life in just 90 seconds by visiting heart.org/nation to join the Nation of Lifesavers. The Mobile CPR unit will also appear at several FIFA Fan Festival sites this summer in New York City, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Dallas.
