GeoVax Labs, Inc. (Nasdaq: GOVX), a clinical-stage biotechnology company, announced on March 25, 2026, that its GEO-MVA vaccine program for mpox and smallpox has completed required clinical product release testing. Final release of the clinical material is scheduled for early April, providing sufficient supply to support the planned pivotal Phase 3 immune bridging study designed in accordance with European Medicines Agency (EMA) guidance. This milestone advances the program toward initiation of the study in the second half of 2026, a critical step toward regulatory Marketing Authorization under an expedited development pathway.
The availability of cGMP clinical material marks a significant inflection point for GeoVax. Chairman and CEO David Dodd stated that with final product release expected shortly, the company is entering the final preparatory phase before initiating the immune bridging study, positioning GeoVax for potential regulatory approval and subsequent commercialization. The study is designed to demonstrate immunological comparability to an approved MVA vaccine, consistent with EMA guidance that supports a streamlined development approach.
Parallel to clinical progress, GeoVax has initiated outreach discussions with organizations that influence or procure vaccines for national stockpiles, military preparedness programs, and international outbreak response initiatives. These discussions aim to secure potential procurement and preparedness contracts, enabling rapid distribution of GEO-MVA upon regulatory or Emergency Use Licensing issuance. Dodd emphasized that early engagement with global health stakeholders highlights the critical need to expand the supply of MVA-based vaccines.
GEO-MVA addresses a significant global supply gap. Current MVA vaccine supply is concentrated with a single commercial manufacturer, limiting redundancy in a platform considered essential for protection against both mpox and smallpox. Recent mpox outbreaks and evolving epidemiological patterns underscore the need for sustained preparedness, including expanded manufacturing capacity and diversified sources. GeoVax believes GEO-MVA can serve as an additional supply source for national stockpile programs, global outbreak response, and military biodefense initiatives.
