Garuda Indonesia is advancing its service transformation with the introduction of a piece-based checked baggage policy, known as the Piece Concept, effective for tickets issued on or after September 1, 2026. The new policy shifts from the previous weight-based system to one that limits baggage by number of pieces and maximum weight per piece, offering allowances of up to two pieces weighing a maximum of 32 kilograms each.
Under the previous Weight Concept, baggage allowances were calculated based on the combined weight of all checked items. The Piece Concept provides greater clarity and certainty for passengers, allowing them to plan and prepare their baggage more easily. For domestic Economy Class, passengers will receive one piece up to 23 kilograms, an increase from the previous 20 kilograms. Business and First Class passengers on domestic routes will receive two pieces up to 32 kilograms each, totaling up to 64 kilograms, compared to previous allowances of 30 and 40 kilograms, respectively.
On international routes, Economy Class passengers will receive two pieces up to 23 kilograms each, up from the previous 30 kilograms total. Business and First Class allowances increase to two pieces up to 32 kilograms each, or 64 kilograms total, from previous allowances of 40 and 50 kilograms. Overall, passengers may receive up to 34 kilograms of additional checked baggage allowance, depending on route and class.
“The implementation of the Piece Concept forms part of Garuda Indonesia’s broader transformation to modernise our services and provide passengers with greater certainty,” said Garuda Indonesia Director of Transformation Neil Raymond Mills. “Clearer limits on the number and maximum weight of baggage pieces will allow passengers to plan and prepare their baggage more easily, from the initial stages of their journey through to departure.”
The Piece Concept is widely adopted across the global aviation industry, and its implementation at Garuda Indonesia is expected to strengthen service standardisation and support more efficient baggage handling. It also provides greater consistency when passengers connect to international flight networks.
Passengers whose tickets are issued before September 1, 2026, will continue to receive the baggage allowance stated on their tickets, even for travel after the implementation date.
