Iqbal, who spent over 15 years supporting the Department of Defense, argues that effective analysis hinges on a few core principles: distinguishing confirmed facts from assumptions, identifying the source of information, acknowledging what remains unknown, and weighing competing explanations before drawing conclusions.

Throughout his career, Iqbal worked across U.S. intelligence, defense policy, and military operations, where dealing with incomplete or conflicting information was routine. He completed five deployments, including three to Afghanistan and two to Iraq, and held assignments at CIA headquarters and within the Pentagon.

His forthcoming book, Syriana: One Conflict, 10 Wars, applies this analytical approach to modern conflict. The book examines how multiple military campaigns, foreign actors, alliances, and strategic interests can coexist within what is often presented publicly as a single war. By breaking down the Syrian conflict into its component parts, Iqbal aims to illustrate the complexity that is often oversimplified in media coverage.
