FingerMotion Inc. (NASDAQ: FNGR) has entered into a binding memorandum of understanding to acquire land rights and permitting for a 9.9 megawatt behind-the-meter power generation and compute site in the County of Newell, Alberta, approximately 185 kilometers southeast of Calgary. The move signals a significant strategic shift for the company, best known for its mobile payment and recharge platform solutions in China, as it seeks to diversify into the energy-intensive compute infrastructure sector.
The site is the first acquisition in FingerMotion's planned Brooks Campus Zone, where the company intends to assemble separately owned and permitted 9.9 MW sites as demand for powered land develops. Located adjacent to an operating third-party natural gas facility, the site is designed to generate and consume power behind the meter without requiring a grid interconnection request, transmission service arrangement, or position in an interconnection queue. This behind-the-meter approach could provide a faster, more predictable path to energization compared to traditional grid-connected projects, which often face lengthy queues and regulatory hurdles.
FingerMotion is targeting a fully permitted site within 120 days of release to work and plans to advance energization only against contracted demand backed by a take-or-pay agreement and funded customer deposit. This disciplined, demand-driven strategy reduces financial risk and aligns with growing interest in distributed power solutions for compute-intensive applications such as data centers and cryptocurrency mining. The acquisition could position FingerMotion to capitalize on the increasing need for reliable, scalable power in regions with abundant natural gas resources.
While FingerMotion's core business remains focused on China's mobile payment market, where it aims to serve over 1 billion users, the Alberta project represents a notable expansion into North American energy infrastructure. The company's vision includes developing an ecosystem of high-engagement users, and the compute site could eventually support value-added technologies. However, the success of this venture will depend on securing take-or-pay agreements and executing the permitting process within the stated timeline.
