A new report from Vostock Capital, titled "Desalination Projects Latin America", provides an exclusive overview of 23 flagship desalination initiatives across Chile, Peru, Mexico, and Brazil. The report underscores the region's growing focus on water security and sustainability, with total investments exceeding $10.5 billion.
Among the highlighted projects is the El Abra Mill Project in Chile, a $7.5 billion initiative developed by Freeport-McMoRan and Codelco. It includes a concentrator, a seawater desalination plant, and a pumping system with a capacity of 500 liters per second. Another Chilean project, the Desalination Plant in Coquimbo Region, led by the Ministry of Public Works, aims to supply potable water to Coquimbo and La Serena with a 1,200 l/s capacity at a cost of $350 million.
In Peru, the Tía María Copper Project by Southern Copper Corp features a 235 l/s reverse osmosis desalination plant exclusively for mining processes, supported by pumping, storage, and transport infrastructure, with a $1.8 billion investment. Mexico's Los Cabos, Baja California Sur project, a $85 million state-of-the-art desalination plant with a 250 l/s capacity, is designed to meet growing water demand sustainably.
Brazil's Ceará Seawater Desalination Plant, developed by Cagece, is a $620 million flagship project with a 1,000 l/s capacity, set to supply potable water to over 720,000 people in Fortaleza, enhancing water resilience in the semi-arid northeast.
As part of its 2026 desalination agenda, Vostock Capital will host two exclusive technical site visits in Spain: the AcuaMed Desalination Plant in Murcia on May 13–14 and the ATL Desalination Plant in Llobregat on September 22–23.
