Joy of Wine Company Inc., doing business as Compliance Vine, has launched Compliance Vine Live, a real-time compliance engine that checks every direct-to-consumer (DTC) wine order against the shipping laws of its destination state. The tool operates automatically in milliseconds within the e-commerce platforms wineries already use, such as Shopify and Commerce7, with additional integrations planned.
Once installed, Compliance Vine Live works quietly in the background of every sale. It verifies that the winery is licensed to ship to the destination state, that the order stays within state volume limits, that age verification requirements are met, that the destination address is not in a restricted locality, and that the correct taxes are applied. Orders that pass go through untouched; those that do not are flagged or stopped before shipping. Every decision is recorded in a tamper-evident, audit-ready log.
“Wine businesses should spend their time making and selling great wine — not chasing spreadsheets and worrying about audits,” said Christopher Anderson, Founder of Joy of Wine Company. “Most wineries don't find out about a compliance problem until weeks later, when the report is due or the fine arrives. Compliance Vine Live moves that moment to the point of sale, where a problem costs nothing to fix.”
Manual compliance can cost a winery upwards of $170,000 a year and consume more than 40 hours of staff time every month. Federal penalties can exceed $26,000 per violation per day, and state regulators have levied fines reaching into the millions. Compliance Vine catches mistakes before they happen, not after they are submitted.
Compliance Vine Live works in conjunction with the Compliance Vine platform, a system of record where wineries manage state shipping reports, tax filing preparation, license and renewal tracking, and audit-ready reporting. Together, the two products cover the full compliance lifecycle across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories. The platform is designed for boutique wineries and enterprise operations alike, with collaborative access for internal teams and outside compliance consultants.
“Compliance has traditionally been viewed as a cost center requiring dozens of staff hours each month,” Anderson noted. “Compliance Vine Live changes that equation by automating repetitive reporting tasks and surfacing actionable insights that help teams work more efficiently.”
Wineries on Shopify and Commerce7 can install Compliance Vine Live directly from their platform's app marketplace; businesses on other systems can integrate via API. Both products are available on a monthly subscription. Future enhancements will include expanded analytics, industry benchmarking, AI-powered compliance assistance, and additional platform integrations.
