The Maryland Tech Council has named Clym Environmental Services, LLC the Life Sciences Innovation of the Year winner at its 2026 ICON Awards, recognizing the company's development of a sustainable waste treatment technology. The award comes as Clym prepares to open a 10,000-square-foot facility in Frostburg, Maryland, in August 2026.
Kelly Schulz, CEO of the Maryland Tech Council, said the award winners represent the best of Maryland's innovation economy, developing groundbreaking technologies and advancing healthcare solutions. The ICON Awards are the state's largest technology and life sciences recognition program, with the Life Sciences Innovation category honoring companies that advance industry science, infrastructure, or practices.
Clym's Frostburg facility will use proprietary technology that generates ozone from ambient air, powered by solar energy, to treat regulated byproducts from life sciences and patient care activities. Unlike conventional thermal treatment, the process does not produce greenhouse gas emissions and allows plastics and other materials to be preserved for reuse, diverting them from landfills.
Charles Watts, Clym's president, said the facility demonstrates that environmental responsibility, innovation, and economic growth can coexist. The facility is located in the Frostburg Industrial Park in Allegany County and will create new green jobs, adding to the company's 32 existing Maryland employees. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for August 2026.
Clym also serves as co-chair of the Maryland Tech Council's Rural Technology Network steering committee for Western Maryland.
