Generating industrial heat produces about 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, surpassing emissions from all cars, planes and ships combined. Yet efforts to decarbonize industrial processes often overlook heat, focusing instead on electrification—which faces grid constraints, high costs, and temperature limitations. Brenmiller Energy Ltd. (NASDAQ: BNRG) is emerging as a trailblazer in thermal energy storage (TES), offering an alternative that promises to overcome these hurdles.

The Israel-based company’s bGen platform uses a patented solid-state heat battery containing crushed volcanic rock to store low-cost renewable electricity as high-temperature heat. On demand, the system releases zero-emission steam, hot water, or air. By employing abundant materials rather than critical battery metals, customers can charge the system when electricity prices are low and discharge during peak demand.

To reduce upfront costs, Brenmiller recently introduced BNRG360, an energy-as-a-service model. Under this approach, the company develops, owns, and operates integrated clean energy systems, delivering heat and power through long-term service agreements. This strategic shift from equipment supplier to energy infrastructure provider is designed to generate recurring revenue and capture greater long-term value as the installed base grows.

The TES market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 10% through 2032, reaching nearly $14 billion, fueled by rising electricity consumption, industrial electrification, grid modernization, and data center expansion. Brenmiller is proving its technology at scale with Tempo Beverages Ltd., a 32-megawatt-hour installation that supplies continuous industrial steam, replacing a fossil fuel boiler. The system eliminates approximately 6,200 tons of CO₂ annually and began delivering steam in June. Tempo is expected to become a key commercial reference, demonstrating real-world deployment and scalability.

Brenmiller is also in discussions with other companies for decarbonization projects. Looking ahead, the company focuses on growth, cash flow, and sustainable profitability, confident that additional customers and project commissionings will drive success. As industrial heat remains a major emission source, Brenmiller’s bGen platform and BNRG360 model position it to help companies decarbonize while capturing a share of the expanding TES market.
