The American Heart Association announced today that Bradley A. Maron, M.D., FAHA, has been named the new editor-in-chief of Circulation, the Association’s flagship peer-reviewed journal. Maron, a board-certified clinical cardiologist and global leader in pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure, succeeds Joseph A. Hill, M.D., FAHA, who led the journal since 2016. This appointment underscores the Association’s commitment to advancing transformative science in cardiovascular medicine, according to Shelley Miyamoto, M.D., FAHA, chair of the Association’s Scientific Publishing Committee.
Maron’s career bridges patient care, translational science, and precision medicine, with a focus on pulmonary vascular disease. He is senior associate dean for precision medicine, director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center, and the Melvin Sharovsky Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He also serves as co-executive director of the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing. His scientific impact includes more than 260 publications, multiple patents, and leadership in federally funded research programs.
Under Maron’s leadership, Circulation will introduce several new features, including a Clinician Lighthouse article for expert-guided interpretation of diagnostic tests, a Clinician’s Corner for real-world clinical practice, and a Patient’s Corner for the public. The journal will also implement graphic abstracts, video commentaries, and an accelerated review timeline. "I am deeply honored to take on the remarkable role of leading Circulation," Maron said. "Our mission is to reinvigorate the type of cardiovascular science and medicine published in Circulation, and fast track that information to our readers with additional transparency."
The new editorial team includes Executive Editor Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, from Washington University School of Medicine, and Deputy Executive Editor Sadiya S. Khan, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA, from Northwestern University. Ten deputy editors will oversee specific sections, including Joseph C. Wu, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, for fundamental sciences; Jennifer E. Ho, M.D., FAHA, and Ryan J. Tedford, M.D., FAHA, for clinical cardiology; and Thomas M. Maddox, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA, for AI for process and science. The journal will also be supported by 27 associate editors and guest editors.
