The 43rd "Baidui Cup" Football Tournament recently concluded in Beijing, drawing over 20,000 young players from 1,481 teams, setting a new participation record. Established in 1984, the tournament is one of China's longest-running youth amateur football events, having been held continuously without interruption. This year, organizers introduced a "two-track" system for the first time, separating participants into Popularization and Competitive groups, a move that signals a significant evolution in the tournament's structure.
The Popularization Group is open to all young football enthusiasts, emphasizing "joyful participation and free team formation." It spans 14 age categories, from six-year-olds to high school students. In the youngest age group, no rankings are recorded, and all participants receive awards, aiming to foster interest and expand the grassroots football base. The Competitive Group, designed for professional club youth academies, sports schools, and school representative teams, covers 10 age categories from 8 to 17. This track provides high-level competition to improve the selection mechanism for reserve talent.
A representative from the Beijing Municipal Sports Bureau highlighted that the "two-track" system marks the Baidui Cup's transformation from a standalone amateur event into a comprehensive youth tournament system that equally emphasizes participation and excellence. This model offers a valuable framework for refining youth football competitions across the country.
The tournament featured notable figures, including international referee Fu Ming, who officiated at the FIFA World Cup 2026, and Shao Jiayi, the tournament's image ambassador and head coach of the Chinese men's national football team. Fu Ming encouraged young players to "win on the condition that you enjoy the game," while Shao Jiayi presented awards and urged the children to compete with courage.
