Annovis Bio Inc. (NYSE: ANVS) announced the promotion of Cheng Fang, Ph.D., to chief scientific officer, effective immediately. Fang, who joined the company in 2021 and most recently served as senior vice president of research and development, will oversee scientific strategy and research operations across Annovis’ Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease programs. His responsibilities include translational science, clinical development, biomarker strategy and regulatory interactions, according to the company’s press release.
The promotion comes at a critical juncture for Annovis as it advances its lead drug candidate, buntanetap, toward top-line data from its pivotal Phase 3 Alzheimer’s disease study and a subsequent New Drug Application submission. Fang has played a key role in advancing the company’s clinical development efforts and will lead its scientific strategy through upcoming clinical and regulatory milestones, the company said.
Buntanetap (formerly posiphen) is an investigational once-daily oral therapy that inhibits the translation of multiple neurotoxic proteins, including APP and amyloid beta, tau, alpha-synuclein, and TDP-43, through a specific RNA-targeting mechanism of action. By addressing the underlying causes of neurodegeneration, Annovis aims to halt disease progression and improve cognitive and motor functions in patients with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.
