The Gabcikovo hydroelectric power plant, a cornerstone of Slovakia's energy infrastructure, is set for a comprehensive modernization. International technology group ANDRITZ, in partnership with Slovak engineering firm VUJE, has been awarded a contract by VODOHOSPODARSKA VYSTAVBA to undertake the project. This initiative is crucial as the plant currently accounts for approximately 10% of Slovakia's electricity production, making its reliability and longevity a matter of national importance.
The project entails the thorough renewal and modernization of the plant's electromechanical equipment, which has a total capacity of 720 MW. The order value is in the mid three-digit million-euro range and will be included in ANDRITZ's order intake for the third quarter of 2026. The modernization aims to improve efficiency and availability while extending the technical service life of key operating equipment by at least 30 years, ensuring the plant continues to contribute to Slovakia's renewable energy goals.
The scope of supply includes model testing, engineering, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning. Modernization will cover key turbine and generator components, automation systems, excitation, protection, and control systems, as well as the renewal of transformers and auxiliary electrical systems. The work will be carried out sequentially to maintain availability during the modernization and minimize impacts on ongoing operations, demonstrating a careful approach to balancing infrastructure upgrades with energy supply needs.
ANDRITZ Hydropower, a division of ANDRITZ, brings over 185 years of innovation and more than 492 GW of installed capacity worldwide to this project.
