AirTrap has launched a modern alternative to traditional spore trap cassettes, updating a sampling tool that has remained largely unchanged since its introduction in the mid-1990s. The new cassettes are now available exclusively through AirTrap.us across North America, targeting indoor air quality professionals, laboratories, restoration firms, schools, and government agencies.
Spore trap cassettes are small air-sampling devices that collect mold spores and other airborne particles for laboratory analysis. The core design, pioneered by Dan Baxter at Aerosol Research Associates, Inc. with the Air-O-Cell cassette in 1995, has been the industry standard for over three decades. AirTrap’s redesign aims to address practical field and laboratory challenges while maintaining compatibility with existing sampling pumps and analysis methods.
Key design refinements include a flip-top cap system engineered to reduce handling errors and minimize sample contamination during transport. The cassette uses approximately 46% less plastic compared to traditional designs and features a recyclable housing, supporting more sustainable testing practices. Durable polypropylene construction ensures reliability in field conditions, while a flatter collection surface improves image clarity during laboratory analysis, including digital and AI-assisted microscopy.
“AirTrap reflects a collaborative effort to revisit and update the cassette design to better align with current inspection demands, laboratory workflows, and environmental considerations,” the company stated. The cassettes are fully compatible with standard air sampling pumps and established laboratory analysis methods, allowing seamless integration without changes to sampling technique.
AirTrap is suitable for indoor air quality assessments, post-remediation verification, real estate inspections, school and university testing programs, cleanroom clearance, and routine environmental monitoring. By modernizing the cassette design while preserving established sampling principles, AirTrap delivers improvements compatible with existing equipment and familiar workflows.
